The brickwork for casting iron manhole covers should follow the manhole cover dimensions specified by the design institute—determined by either the inner diameter or the length × width measurements, depending on whether construction is based on actual samples or standard guidelines. When building the well, ensure that the inner diameter of the well opening matches the inner diameter of the manhole cover and grate. Once the cover is installed, it should sit flush with the surrounding pavement surface. After pouring and laying the concrete or asphalt around the well base, promptly open and clean the area to prevent mortar or asphalt from bonding the manhole cover permanently to the base—this could otherwise hinder future access and removal of the cover.
